A Different Approach.   Wholesalers of Fine Nicaraguan & Peruvian Crafts

About Us

Fair Trade: A Different Approach is a fair trade wholesaler of Nicaraguan crafts. We began working with the artisans in Nicaraguan six years ago after spending a bit of time in Central America. Nicaragua has many exceptional artisans including potters, sculptors, painters and weavers. However, most of these artisans do not have adequate access to markets to provide a decent living for themselves and their families. The number of tourists who visit Nicaragua is low compared to its neighbors, and Nicaragua has not yet developed its international craft market to the level of other Latin American nations. We at A Different Approach decided to help in the expansion of their markets by becoming one outlet dedicated to bringing these beautiful Nicaraguan crafts to the American public.

In our working relationships with the artisans of Nicaragua we are dedicated to the principles of Fair Trade. Fair trade is a way of doing business in which low-income artisans and farmers gain access to needed markets and are empowered to become economically independent. For more information on fair trade please visit the Fair Trade Federation at www.fairtradefederation.org

Potters for Peace: The pieces we offer come from women's collectives and small family businesses. One small NGO (non-governmental organization) that has been a driving force behind the revival of pottery making among these groups is Potters for Peace. PFP was founded by US potters out of a desire to show solidarity with the potters of Nicaragua. They sponsor cross-cultural exchanges between potters from others countries and the potters of Nicaragua. In addition, they work to improve the lives of marginalized groups by introducing pottery-making as a microenterprise. They hold workshops to introduce new techniques and skills, provide technical assistance, and help link artisans and buyers.

Video: There is a wonderful video about what these potters of Nicaragua have faced - from the Contra War to the devastation of Hurricane Mitch - and how Potters for Peace has made a difference in the lives of these potters. For this 18 minute video please contact Francesca Roveda at froveda2001@aol.com. There is a $25 charge plus shipping that PFP uses to continue their work in Nicaragua.

Important Information from Brenda Nims
about a New Relationship Between
A Different Approach and One World Projects
Hello.

This past year has brought many changes to our business. We appreciate your patience in working with us through this time of recovery from Hurricane Katrina and apologize for any delays and inconveniences you have experienced. During this time we have had a chance to reevaluate what is important to us and we wish to tell you about some positive changes we are making in our business.

We have decided to leave New Orleans and make Shreveport, LA our new home. We have enjoyed being so close to family this past year. We permanently moved our warehouse out of New Orleans in May 2006.

We have also decided to combine forces with One World Projects. This past year has helped us realize how costly and ineffective it is to duplicate efforts. In this new agreement with One World Projects, they will be warehousing, shipping and billing customers. A Different Approach will continue the direct interface with the artisans. We will focus on product development with existing as well as new artisans in Nicaragua. Secondly, we wish to stay in better contact with our customers and search out new markets for the products we carry.

We have worked closely with One World Projects for many years. They are an established well-respected wholesaler working in craft production throughout the world. Phil, the founder, is tirelessly dedicated to fair trade principles and environmentally sustainable practices. He left his career to begin One World Projects in order to support these principles. He presently represents several Fair Trade groups, and we feel this is a good fit for us.

So how will this work?
New containers will be shipped directly to One World Projects. There will be a short transitional phase during which we will ship from both locations as we clear out our warehouse here in Shreveport. Thereafter, you will receive your shipments and bills from One World Projects. Of course you will retain the same billing terms.

We will still be here to answer any product questions and concerns. Orders can either be sent to us (especially if you have product questions) or directly to One World Projects. We will continue to have a booth at the San Francisco International Gift Show and exhibit in One World Projects booth (5216-5218 in Handmade) at the New York International Gift Fair.

If you have any concerns or questions, please contact us at 318.868.6816. We look forward to a continued relationship with our customers.
