Other Projects Doing Good Work in Nicaragua and Peru |
|
Here are some groups that we have come across in our work in Nicaragua and
Peru. We are starting this page in response to requests from our customers
who are interested in donating to projects in the countries we work in.
These are all small grassroots projects that we know of personally. A Different Approach is not a part of these projects, but we feel that they are doing good work. Please contact them directly for volunteer opportunities or to donate. NICARAGUA
Project Chacocente www.OutoftheDump.org 33 Forest Street, #310 Lexington, MA 02421 Project Chacocente works with poor families that are living in the city dump of Managua, reintroducing them into a society in which they have not participated in years. Project Chacocenta commits to working with families for the long-term, teaching them the skills (such as literacy, problem solving, parenting, and business) that they need in order to reintegrate into society. They also work with families on building a house and home for their children outside the dump. For more information, please check out their web site. Potters for Peace www.pottersforpeace.org The pieces we offer come from women's collectives and small family businesses. One small NGO (non-governmental organization) that has been a driving force behind the revival of pottery making among these groups is Potters for Peace. PFP was founded by US potters out of a desire to show solidarity with the potters of Nicaragua. They sponsor cross-cultural exchanges between potters from others countries and the potters of Nicaragua. In addition, they work to improve the lives of marginalized groups by introducing pottery-making as a microenterprise. They hold workshops to introduce new techniques and skills, provide technical assistance, and help link artisans and buyers. For more information, please visit their web site. |
